The Baylor men?s and women?s basketball teams that went deep into their respective NCAA tournaments?including the women going 40-0 and winning the national title?face possible NCAA sanctions for numerous improper recruiting contacts, according to an ESPN.com report.
Men?s coach Scott Drew, women?s coach Kim Mulkey and their assistants were involved in more than 1,200 impermissible phone calls and text messages allegedly made during a 29-month span, according to the report. The potential infractions were called ?major? due to the frequency of the contacts in a summary disposition produced by the NCAA enforcement committee and Baylor.
In a statement, Baylor said, ?The institution remains committed to protecting the integrity of the totality of the case in accordance with its obligations under NCAA legislation and therefore the University, and its officials, will make no comment.?
An NCAA official said the organization does not comment on potential, pending or current investigations.
Baylor has self-imposed penalties as a result of the NCAA probe, which began in 2008 with the recruitment of star center Brittney Griner. The NCAA sent a summary of its findings to Baylor in October. The NCAA?s committee on infractions could announce as early as this week whether it will level more penalties.
The report of possible sanctions comes amid arguably the greatest season in the history of Baylor athletics. Besides the women?s basketball title, Baylor?s men?s team reached the Elite Eight and its football team went 10-3, highlighted by quarterback Robert Griffin III winning the Heisman Trophy.
