From The Doncaster Free Press?..
HUNDREDS of children are taking the plunge in the borough?s swimming pools, as health chiefs try to reduce Doncaster?s childhood obesity levels.
More than 1,000 people have enjoyed free swimming sessions at Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT) pools between April and June this year as part of British Gas?s ?Free Swims for Britain? campaign, with over 200 additional people using the facilities for the first time.
Over 6,000 children swim at the trust?s venues through its Learn to Swim programme or educational swimming lessons at its sites which include Armthorpe, Adwick and Rossington.
The numbers come as a boost to health bosses after figures revealed Doncaster was one of the most overweight towns in the country, causing a ?92 million a year strain on the NHS.
Amanda Bradley, DCLT?s health and leisure manager, said: ?By the end of June, we had 1,326 bookings through the campaign ? more than 200 of which were from people who had never been to our pools. We are really proud to be introducing so many people to swimming and helping them improve their skills.
?Swimming is not only a fun activity, but also a potentially life-saving skill, and it has a number of health benefits. It is never too late to start swimming and we offer a range of popular classes and sessions for all ages.?
